How CarStream handles your data
This page explains, in plain terms, what information CarStream collects when you use the app, why we collect it, who we share it with, and how to remove it.
last updated · May 6, 2026Who we are
CarStream is a vehicle dashboard that connects your car to your phone via a small CarStream unit installed in the vehicle. The service runs at carstream.live with companion mobile apps for iOS and Android. This policy applies to all of them.
For privacy questions, account deletion, or to request a copy of your data, email flower.moor@gmail.com.
What we collect
The information CarStream stores about you falls into a few groups:
Your email address, an optional first and last name, and a password. Passwords are protected so that nobody — including us — can read them in plain text.
The name you give your car, optional details like VIN, fuel type, and tank size, and a record of which CarStream unit is paired to that car.
Information sent from the CarStream unit while you drive: speed, RPM, engine temperature, fuel level, throttle, fault codes, and similar values reported by your car's onboard computer. This includes precise location (latitude and longitude) while the unit is online.
Start and end times, distance, top and average speed, fuel used, and the route taken — built from the driving data above.
If you enable push notifications, a notification token from your phone so we can deliver alerts. A history of any rules you create (speed limits, geofence zones, speed cameras) and when they triggered.
Standard server logs (IP address, what page or screen was requested, timestamps) kept for security and to fix bugs.
We do not collect your contacts, photos, microphone, advertising IDs, or browsing on other sites. There are no advertising or analytics trackers in the apps.
Why we collect it
- Account information — to sign you in and keep your data separate from other users'.
- Driving data and location — they are the product. Without them the dashboard, trip history, and route map would be empty.
- Notifications — only if you turn them on. We use them to send the alerts you ask for, like trip start/end, speed limits, geofence entries, and speed-camera warnings.
- Technical logs — to keep the service running and detect abuse. We don't use them for marketing.
For users in the EU and UK, our legal basis is performance of the contract for everything that powers the core service, and your consent for anything optional (like push notifications).
Who we share data with
We do not sell your data. We don't share it with advertisers. The only third parties that ever see any of it are the service providers that help us run specific features:
- Our email provider — when we send you account emails (verification, password reset). They only see your email address and the message we're sending you.
- Our push notification provider — to deliver notifications to your phone via Apple and Google. They see the message and a notification token; they don't see who you are.
- Our hosting provider — the company that operates the servers where your data is stored.
- Map providers — when you view a map, your phone or browser asks them for the map imagery, which exposes what area you are looking at. We don't pass your name or account to them.
We may also disclose information when legally required (such as a valid court order) or when needed to protect users from imminent harm.
How your data is protected
- Traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit.
- Passwords are stored using one-way hashing — even we can't see them.
- Access to the database that stores your data is limited and not exposed to the public internet.
- You can sign out of any device at any time, which invalidates that device's session.
Where your data is stored
Our servers are located in the United States. If you are accessing CarStream from the EU, UK, or another region, your data is transferred to and stored in the United States in compliance with applicable data-transfer rules.
How long we keep it
- Account information — for as long as your account exists. After deletion we keep a short backup window (up to 30 days) before permanent removal.
- Driving data and trips — kept while your account is active so you can review your history. You can delete a car (which removes its data) or your whole account at any time.
- Notification tokens — removed when you sign out of a phone or uninstall the app.
- Technical logs — kept for at most 30 days, then rotated out automatically.
Your rights
You can ask us to:
- Show you what we have about you.
- Correct any wrong details — most of this you can edit yourself in Profile.
- Delete your account and all the driving data we hold for you.
- Export a copy of your data in a portable format.
- Stop notifications by turning them off in your phone's Settings, or by signing out of the device.
To do any of the above, email flower.moor@gmail.com from the address on your account. We respond within 7 days and complete requests within 30 days.
Cookies and tracking
CarStream stores a sign-in token in your browser so you stay logged in. We do not use cookies for advertising, analytics, or cross-site tracking. There are no third-party trackers on this site or in the mobile apps.
Phone permissions
The mobile app asks for the following only when needed:
- Bluetooth — to find and connect to your CarStream unit during initial setup.
- Notifications — to deliver alerts you turn on.
- Location — only if you turn on a feature that uses your phone's location. The live dashboard map uses the location reported by the CarStream unit, not your phone.
You can change any of these in your phone's Settings at any time. The related feature will simply stop working until you grant it again.
Children
CarStream is not intended for children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has used CarStream, contact us and we will remove the account.
Changes to this policy
If we make important changes, we'll update the "last updated" date above and let active users know by email. Small wording fixes won't trigger a notification. If you don't agree with a change, you can delete your account at any time.
